Leo is designating Charles, the head of the Church of England, as a “royal confrater” of St. Paul’s Outside the Walls, one of the four papal basilicas. To that end Charles will be granted the use of a special, permanent chair. Charles will also pray alongside the Pope in the Sistine Chapel as part of a public “ecumenical service.” “It will mark a significant moment in relations between the Catholic Church and Church of England, of which His Majesty is Supreme Governor, recognising the ecumenical work they have undertaken and reflecting the Jubilee year’s theme of walking together as ‘Pilgrims of Hope,’” said a spokesperson for Buckingham Palace.
