(LifeSiteNews) — Pope Leo XIV has chosen to exclude the Roman Canon for all three papal Masses to be offered during his upcoming visit to France.

The missal at all three scheduled Masses — in Paris, Lourdes, and Metz — will use Eucharistic Prayer III, spoken in French, instead of Eucharistic Prayer I, the ancient Roman Canon.

This continues a trend of the current and previous pontificates.

InfoVaticana suggests that the decision to exclude the Roman Canon “takes on special significance in Lourdes,” which is the central celebration of the Pope’s visit.

“With the Creed and Gloria sung in Gregorian chant and the Sanctus, Agnus Dei, and Our Father in Latin. In such a carefully prepared setting, Eucharistic Prayer I — the most ancient and venerable of the Roman rite, the only one of the Latin Church for fourteen centuries — would have been the natural choice,” asserted InfoVaticana. “The organizers have once again preferred the anaphora composed in 1968.”

News that the French papal Masses will exclude the Roman Missal follows reports that Pope Leo has ignored audience requests from traditionalist Summorum Pontificum pilgrims.
